The doRiaN Mode performs vintage jazz, swinging R&B and soulful ballads throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
DORIAN BARTLEY sings vintage jazz and blues while playing upright bass,
supported by the piano and cornet of Bob Johns. They are joined by a
variety of instruments as suits the occasion, including percussion and tenor
sax: The doRiaN Mode. She enjoys jazz standards, cabaret classics and early R&B. Dorian expresses her biracial identity through her music. She was born in the Midwest and performed in string bands throughout
her youth. Dorian pursued choral studies at the University of Michigan and
the University of California at Berkeley and taught vocal music for many
years in Petaluma's public schools as well as worked with the Artifacts, a
local trio. She currently performs with Foxes in the Henhouse, winner of the
Bohemian's 2013 Norbay Award for Best Acoustic/Folk Band, as well as
The Gravenstein Mandolin Ensemble and various freelance groups. Dorian
plays at clubs, festivals and private events around the Bay Area.
BOB JOHNS (piano/cornet) Bobís early piano lessons grew into a desire to
improvise like his father who played jazz trumpet in big bands and small
groups. When he arrived in San Francisco after a 4-year Navy hitch, Bob
found like-minded players who formed the fusion group Nexus, playing in
San Francisco and the East Bay through the 80s. He played keyboard and
trombone for a time in the African group, Hedzoleh Soundz. Bob plays
each Tuesday night with his jazz buddies at the Comstock Saloon in San
Francisco's North Beach. He hosts an Open Mic once a month in
Petaluma at the United Methodist Church.
DAVID SYDNEY SCOTT (sax) boarded a ship when he was an Australian teenager
and headed for New Caledonia as a jazz musician. He settled for 10 years
in Tahiti, playing jazz, rock and island music as well as learning French.
David loved the fast dance tempos and when he sat in with a Sonoma
County band, Gator Beat (now known as Gator Nation) in 1990, he found
a means to express his own unique Zydeco style with interwoven horn
and accordion. David is part of the Collaboration Jazz Band which
TONY BLAKE (percussion) was born and raised in San Francisco.
Chameleon-like and eclectic in his percussive expression, Tony is equally
comfortable in symphony orchestras, small jazz ensembles, folk, rock or
world music groups. He has developed a playing style that draws on many
traditions. Finding the common pulse to support the music inspires him,
no matter what the setting. Tony resides in Petaluma and is employed as
an Environmental Scientist. He spends much of his free time traveling the
San Francisco Bay Area making music.
